Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce says it’s the worst year yet for businessmen in the central area.

Chamber President, Vishnu Charran said, “over the years business sales have dropped but this year it’s the worst ever the Chamber has seen, as sales are the lowest ever.”

He said as a result of the fall in oil prices and the decline in revenue for the government, and with no money trickling down, the lay man will be affected.

The Chamber president added he has reports from businesses in central and they too are feeling the effects of the economic downturn.

Charran contends that Chamber members are saying that citizens are cutting back as they too are feeling the effects of the economic downturn.

He noted that even street vendors are feeling the effects and some small and medium business owners are on the verge of closing down.

Charran said however, he was more optimistic about 2018.

Speaking to the Trinidad Guardian, Chaguanas businessman Rajiv Dipnarinesingh said, “I am coping with how business has slowed and I anticipate that next year will be a difficult year financially. I also have my concerns about crime and security. We're hoping for last minute shopper in the lead up for to the weekend.”
